I need someone who knows the part # catalog to help me out and hopefully enlighten me.
I finally cut the welds on the cover and toolbox covering the tank a PO installed in the bed of my '70 F100.
I did this to find out why I was not getting a reading from the sending unit.
What I found was a rectangular tank measuring 41.5 x 11.5 x 17.
It has a 6 bolt sending unit Ford #D3TE-9275 and also stamped EA G4
The sending unit is extremely rusty and the float is missing.
I tested with the factory gauge and it read a range from empty to half a tank.
I also tested with an aftermarket gauge and it read from half to full.
Either the sending unit is bad and therefore not reading properly or it has the wrong resistance values for both gauges.
Here are some pics of the tank and sending unit. Any info you can share about the tank and or the sending unit would be appreciated.
D3TZ-9275-E (replaced B8T-9275-A) .. Fuel Tank Sending Unit / Marked C4TF-9275-T, D3TF-9275EA or EB and etc / Obsolete
Use with 30 gallon left side outside frame mounted fuel tank (41.50" long x 17" wide x 11.30" high).
1957/77 P350/500 (P Series Parcel Delivery) / 1961/77 B500 (School Bus) / 1973/77 M450 (Class A Motorhome) / 1973/77 all: Use without Evaporative Emission.
The original sending unit float was made from two pieces of copper soldered together. Solder broke down, gas seeped in, float settled to the bottom of the tank.
Same float: 1957/79 Passenger Cars/Trucks, 1961/79 Econolines & 1966/79 Bronco's. One piece 'never leak' repro brass float available from Carpenter for about 5 bucks.
From what I've been told in the past, Ford wires their fuel gauges opposite from Chevy and probably the aftermarket world. One uses ground at the dash and one grounds at the tank. That explains the opposite readings. You mention it is rusty. Internally the resistance spring is also rusty. Replace that sender unit. It will come with a float also.
OK, so the sending unit for the large truck has the same resistance range as the f100?
That was my main concern. you know, why spend the extra cash is it wasn't going to read properly.
They have them for $50 at Dennis Carpenters and just the float for $5.

Yep. Ford liked to use the same values back in the good old days. Get that D3TZ9275E that d.c. has. Will solve your problem.
Awesome, thanks for the info.
Now I guess I wasted the money on the aftermarket gauge.
It was a risk I took. oh well.
Just glad to know the stock gauge will work properly with the new sending unit.
One less gauge hanging under the dash
