Spliced headlight wire

Spliced headlight wire
I noticed this on both headlight plugs. The green w/black strip wire has been cut and extended. Why would someone do this, was something else wired into this then removed?
I am going to remove the extra wiring and fix it right I was just curious.

Someone may have added an additional relay for each headlight and a separately fused, heavier gauge wire from the battery to supply the high beams. Means less voltage drop and brighter headlights. More likely if your headlights have been upgraded to '03-04 (clear lenses.) Also, the 01's had amber running/turn signals, if yours are clear w/yellow lamps, that is another mod that may have been part of that type of upgrade. (BTW, I'm planning on that mod for my '01. About 60% of my driving is after dark.)
I would solder the wires. Slip a little shrink tube over the wire first and and shrink it down over the splice.

The previous owner might have had the relay hooked up, I don't know why they would remove it. I still have the '01 headlights. I have been wanting to upgrade the lenses to the 03-04 style. I'll have to look up on how to add the relay before I repair this. Maybe I'll add them.
