Ok i think i have just about read every post on this site and i want to say thanks for all the helpi have gotten just by reading. It came time for me to join and get to know this great group of people.
Ok on to the question that i know has been asked but couldnt find or read what i wanted to. I have a 1972 f100 that i use for my weekend ride its 2wd. It has a nice little cammed 302 and wow it sounds good but it has more bark than bite. I just aquired a 1995 econoline 351w that will be going carbed and what i have read is it is a roller block. I want to build this motor without stroker to have as much power as i can and be drivable too. It has a aod with a 2800 stall now. I dont have a unlimited budget but i will spend what is needed to reach my goal. So i have block and a rpm air gap intake and a new 750 dp carb I want to know what yall would do as far as internals heads cam and anything else that i might be missing. I want a motor that will really wake up the ole ford i enjoy surprising folks when they get left by a 40 plus year old truck. Dont know if this is needed but it has 3.70 gear. Short question i want a really strong tire burning ole ford help me spend my money and make me want to never get out of the drivers seat.
The stock heads have small valves. The best investment would be a set of heads.
I personally have used heads with 2.02 and 1.60 valves and 60cc chambered heads and have had real amazing results over the stock ones.
We're on similar paths. My '70 F100 is getting a '95 F150 5.8L/351W short block with custom cam, Air Gap, Holley 600 (for now), Dart heads, and Mustang shortie headers. Its is getting a 4R70W transmission with stand-alone controller.
You no doubt have an F4 block. I'm told not all those engines had roller lifters but, if not, its easy to make them ready for rollers.
Ive been looking at heads and was thinking afr 185s ive read that its a very good head but i dont have any experience with them can anybody give a idea on cam selection for this setup that would do what i want. I definatly not against a custom cam but dont know who to talk too can yall give me some advice on somebody to call to get one made like i said im willing to spend the money just need steering in the right direction.
My truck does not have power steering is there a way to use the accessorys that are on the 351 out of the van. Can i remove power steering and find a belt or maybe there is some type of pulley that will take its place. Also the airconditioner ompressor that is on it is new could i use it for the under dash ac that is in truck instead of york c ompressor?
My Ford computor only lists a roller cam for a 1995 e250 Van. And only one block choice.
Here is some old info for you guys that may help. I know it's a 302 not a 351w but it's interesting. Back in the day before Ford Racing Performance Parts (Motorsport) came out with their own new 302 motors, we dealers sold these RHO 302s. I personally had a pair of RHO heads on a 83 mustang GT (plus a few other parts. wink.wink.) that never lost a race to a Bow tie or Indian. Check this out off Google.

The RHO 5.0 comes as a complete, assembled long-block with heads, all the valvetrain components (including the timing chain and gears), and an oil pump
Well im hoping its a roller block but am i understanding right if it a 94 and above block it is already roller compatable? So does that mean hyd roller cam will install but will have to get the lifters with the bar? Is that the only thing or is there machining that needs to be done. Sorry always been the person to call and get my motors built and it show up ready to install. Since ive built everything on this truck i want to be able to say i did all of it im sure alot of yall know where im coming from on that. I will have a very experienced person guiding me thru the build so i dont make rookie mistakes but im still gonna be the one turning the wrenches but it dang sure dont hurt to have somebody over your shoulder to explain everything. To everybody that has responded to this post thank you.
Maybe somebody will come in and tell me what to expect out off this motor. Can i make into a tire burner and something that will pull hard and make me smile. Ive had some fast trucks but never one i enjoyed this much its definatly a addiction and my bank account shows it.
It's been years now but the way I remember it the block is forged with tall lifter bosses required for roller lifters whether the motor was built with them or not that year. So yes, you should be able to use a roller cam. Once you take the intake off that motor you will see them. Roller lifters do have to have the bar to keep them straight in the lifter bore. As far as a tire burner goes, Son, you can build that 351w as far as your heart AND bank account will let you. One note, tire burning and leaving people in the dust with a vehicle as heavy as a Bump is normally Big Block country. Check out www.fordracing.com. Check out their motors and what's in them. All the way up to a 351w based 427 cu. in. with 600HP and 558 lb-ft of torque! I know you mentioned in the beginning not stroking it but I think you ought to consider either stroke or a power adder. Whether you choose turbo, supercharger, or NOS. Get yourself a game plan and start buying things towards that goal. GET-R-DUN!
