E7 Heads for the Effie?

Howdy all,

Just picked up some aluminum Air Flow Research heads, custom cam etc for my "wife's" 94 Mustang GT. Thinking I might try the leftover stang parts on my Effies 302. I have no doubt this would be a good plan if the truck was injected. The Mustang is currently very snappy on the low end, and all done by 5K. Anyone ever run the 5.0 E7TE heads and/or cam with a carburetor? BTW, the truck currently has heads circa 1980. Truck has 3.90 gears, C4 and Edelbrock Performer intake and carb. I'm thinking it's probably a good plan? But then again, I'm the same guy that thought 80's smog heads would be acceptable. Not that I am going racing, but they are completely pathetic, signing off around 4000 RPM. Truck weighs 100-200 pounds more than the Mustang.

Isnt there some issue with using roller cam heads on a non roller? I seem to remember something about that when I was looking at the 85 351W in one of my work trucks.
BTW, E5 heads are supposed to be good with a little bit of work and a Performer intake. Or so Ive been told.

Not to my knowledge Carl. There are issues with running a roller cam in a non-roller block. Cost of retro parts makes it wiser to just get a roller block. I have the Performer flat tappet cam in non-roller block. And it would suit my needs just fine. It's just the old '80 vintage heads I would really like to lose. Like I said, I'm not racing. But for the money in my engine, I should be able to wind it up a smallblock to 5K every now and then. The truck will likely someday be factory style injected. Just like to get some use out of the carbed non-roller engine, since it only has a few thousand miles on a thorough rebuild. I'd probably sell it if there was a little better market for carbed engines. I'd really enjoy building another engine anyway.

So when are you coming home Dewayne or are you still enjoying sand with your coffee? My #2 son spent some time flying out of Kuwait primarily making beer runs to Germany

According to all the Mustang guys, those heads will go just fine on your carbed engine. I've seen them on 289s as well as 302s.

I have a 5.0 Mustang Convertible that I am currently selling. I also have alot of stock parts that I took off.

I am going to be using my E7TE heads and H.O. cam on an extra '90 Passenger car 302 in my '55. I think the main "bottle neck" on the stock H.O.'s was the stock Fuel Injection Intake. It couldn't flow enough air past 5 grand, therefore, choking the engine. I think it will run fine with a decent Carb/Aluminum intake setup. That is what I am going to do. I am going to use the Edelbrock Performer Carb/Intake.

That and some 4.10 gears!!! Only because I have an overdrive trans.
