Well, actually.....it turned out to be $60 total since I did all three of my trucks at once ($20 for a pair of windows). The rear doors and back glass were already tinted so I only needed to tint the two front doors. I found a place online that sells window tint pre-cut to shape. The computer plot was perfect and the pieces fit really nice. The film seemed like good quality stuff as well.
In the past, I have found that knifing the film was always the hardest part for me because I wouldn't cut deep enough and end up tearing the tint by accident. So, having it pre-cut to your particular vehicle made the installation super nice. If you decide to try this yourself....resist the temptation to trim the piece....it will fit perfectly without any trimming. The excess material on the left and right sides will tuck neatly behind the felt channels. Keep in mind the visible opening of the glass is wider when viewed from outside so you need to look at it from that perspective to make sure you have full coverage.
I will try and upload some pics.
EDIT: The photos should appear stacked....if they appear side by side then shrink down the size of your screen (left to right) so the photos are stacked. They will make more sense that way.
How do you get the tint to fit so nice at the bottom of the window? I think that would be the difficult part.
Since the door panel comes off so easily (about 2 minutes...), I decided to go ahead and remove them. Then I just let the tint run long down into the door channel. The folks who sold me the tint sent over some great links to online videos that show an alternative method of applying the vinyl without removing the door panels. I guess this would be helpful for those vehicles where removing the panel is a pain.
Nice work. I buy the Black magic tint from walmart. its about $6 a window, I know what your saying about ripping the tint, its very important that you get a good NEW razor I get the titanium tipped blades that cost an extra buck.
So far the tint job is holding up great!
However, I've learned the tint supplier has a premium grade product available. It's a little bit more expensive but I'd probably choose the premium grade if given the choice to do it over again. I think the premium grade has more UV protection and is more forgiving material to work with.
I tried to rep you, but apparently I've repped you a time or two too many before. So I'm bumping this thread instead, so others can rep this great post with well annotated pictures. Besides, summer is here, which means it's Tintn Time.
I need to redo my removable tint and reapply something better. Besides, tint will contribute to making the cab more silent.
Come on guys It takes a LOT of time to not only interrupt what you are doing every 3 minutes in order to take in progress pics, but to also load the pictures into paint and annotate them with text and arrows arranged to make clear explanations prior to uploading. Write ups don't get any better on an online forum than what ShakeNBake has put up here in this post. Rep him if you can!
