Thumbs up Replacing Door Glass

I was not looking forward to this job, but I got it done yesterday in about 2 hours total.

My 1983 F-150 had tinted windows that had been severely scratched by a dog that used to live in the cab. It also had dry-rotted window tracks that made the truck really fun on the highway. Had to raise my voice to talk to my passengers!

My 1984 F-150 had clear good glass, and will be sold soon. I ignored my friends advise telling me to break down and buy new glass and window stripping. I'm cheap this way.

I started by removing the door panels on both trucks. Then, rolled both windows down. Removed the 2 screws on the window vent edge, and the bolt down by the window crank. The vent window comes out with a little nudging, along with the window track. Then, it is so easy to remove the glass at this point. The window stripping simply slides into the channel, and the one on my '84 is in good shape. It slipped right out after a bit of persuasion.

I swapped the vent window assemblies from one truck to the other with absolutely no problems.

Now, my '83 has lost that awful looking tint that made it look so bad. The '84 is not as nice as it was, but I saved $$$, and can now talk at a normal volume on the highway. Also, the heater works better now. Half the heat is not being sucked out around the windows anymore. This summer, the A/C will be really nice!

On the '84, I got all the pieces of channel seal out of the '83 and installed it using a touch of silicone glue in the track. Now, the 84 sounds almost as quiet as the 83 does.

If you have been hesitant about working on your windows, I'm here to tell you that it is not as difficult as you might think!

One other thing, I greased the window regulators on both trucks with white lithium grease. What a difference a bit of grease makes!!! My other half will not be whining about how hard the windows are to crank anymore. (Whining was not my first choice of words... it began with a b.)

Good job, holmes.
I greased my regulator like when my 83 was 10 yrs old, it is still operating smoothly.
Now why couldn't Ford do that?
Yeah, service work...$$$$.

It's really time I do the channels and the sweeps. Did you replace the sweeps too?
Theyre the pieces laying horizontally, keeping stuff out of the inner door.
I see lmc has all this stuff.
Thanks for sharing.

Wink

Both of the sweeps on my doors are in about the same shape, so I left them alone. I have that LMC catalogue, too.

There's alot in that catalogue that I want, and there's alot that I dont need. I would like to go thru the thing using somebody elses money. The truck would be immaculate.

For now, its sounding better.

Thanks!
