I have a 2001 F350 that I recently purchased it developed an oil leak that I planned to have fixed soon, a couple days later it took nearly 30 seconds to finally turn over one morning and once it did blew a ton of white smoke. then driving one day it died when coming to a stop but started right back up and did it again the following day and was parked for a few hours. Now it won't start at all just turns over does not even sound like its gonna start. Any ideas where to start I appreciate y'all's help.
Have your high pressure oil system checked out first.
There might be multiple things wrong with the truck that are just compounding and causing a variety of issues.
The process of elimination is going to have to come into affect big time here.
Oil level is integral with these trucks. The fuel injectors are run by high pressure oil, and if the level is low, the truck will give you the same symptoms as bad fuel pump, filter, etc. I know from experience. I had a rotten oil pan, and ended up cooking one injector completely, with 2 more on the way out, all because I was leaking oil faster than I thought. My thought at the time was, if the thing holds 15 qts., 3 low wont really affect it much. How wrong I was. Not saying that's def. your problem, but its a real simple thing to start with as far as troubleshooting goes. Even high miles on the oil can have the same effect.

Get your batteries charged up to the max and then get them load tested. Get you a plug in volt meter from wally world to check voltage.
When you know that your batts are good.
Turn key on to check GPR.
voltage will go (look at volt meter) from 12.5v to 11.5v. (GPR on).
wait to start light goes out (GPR may not be working and cause white smoke?)
Turn key and try to start.... volt meter will/should drop to 11v.
If The Volt Meter Drops Below 10.5v The Truck Will Not Start as the system needs 10.5v or above to get going.
If falls below 10.5v, batts may be shot.
If/when truck starts at 11v, it will now go to 12.5v and when GRP shut off the voltage will slowly move up to the output of the Alt., which should be around 14.3volts.
The 'shutting' down issue maybe a CPS that is going bad and needs to be replaced.
The in-tank fuel pickup assemblies on these trucks/Excursions are falling apart inside after 12-13 years. Mine was...as are most everyone's on this forum. My wife "ran out of gas" at 1/8 tank in ours recently. When I dropped the tank, I found the pickup foot had disintegrated, and the pickup screens in the tank were partially clogged. The solution to this is the Hutch mod everyone talks about on here. If you have NO white smoke while cranking (out tail pipe), this could be why you are getting no fuel to the injectors. You also need to check your fuel filter on top of the engine. If you HAVE white smoke, you need to look at oil/oil pressure issues.
Brother Les is right on, though. Checking out your batteries is first and free.
