don't use silicone

351w is getting rebuilt, Machine shop just informed me that I have a cracked block, They said that the water pump was installed with silocone gasket material and by installing the bolts the silocone does not squeeze out thus putting force on the block. Now I am in the process of finding a new block for a truck that is totally rebuilt. Word the wise, don't use silocne in this type of situation, shop said this is not the first time this has shown up.

should read "don't MIS-use silicone"

a smear a thin layer on both sides of the gasket. never had a problem.

How does silicone exert any more pressure than gasket material? And how does that stuff crack a block? It's like play-doah. I think someone was using their handy 3/4 impact wrench when installing the pump.

If you need to seal threads that might be going into the water jacket, a little on the threads will suffice. You don't need to squeeze a gob into the hole. That's just about the only way silicone could crack a block.
