The truck originally came with a 300 and C4. It was a little underpowered hauling my 1972 Wolverine 11.5' slide in camper. I did a heater core in a '78 air conditioned truck for a guy I worked with and he gave me a bunch of 390 stuff including a Camper Special short block. Due to some cylinder wall pitting I bored it .030 over. This was probably around 1985. I did find a few references, probably not accurate, the listed the 390 4 barrel until 12/31/76 and after that the 400 2 barrel replacing it.

It had a 3.70 gear and would haul buggy. Got 16 mpg highway. I designed a set of duals that went down the right side and exited on a 45° angle behind the rear wheel.

I WILL TRY TO ADD A LARGER PHOTO WHEN I GET HOME FROM WORK. THE ENGINE IS NOT ORIGINAL. THE GUY THAT SWAPPED IT FOR ME SAID IT WAS A 351M BUT I HAD SOME PEOPLE LOOK AND THEY KEEP TELLING ME ITS A 302 OR A 351W. SO I STILL REALLY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS SINCE IVE NEVER GOT A REAL CLEAR ANSWER.

Count the bbolts holding on the valve covers:

If 351M/400 = 8 bolts; also, the fuel pump is held on with 2 bolts vertically oriented, this is the only engine to do this.

If 302/351W = 6 valve cover bolts, horizontally-opposed bolts holding on fuel pump.

Franklin2 has a good drawing that can help you determine between 302 and 351w:

Are you talking about me???

I said that 351M and 400 were meant to replace the FE engines, but I didn't say anything about a 351W or a 302 (or even the 351M or 400) being superior to an FE. For that matter, superiority isn't really defined by any one set of circumstances. One might say a Prius is superior to a 460 in emissions and gas mileage, but that the 460 is superior to the Prius in power and speed.

Kind of like Charmin vs Scott toilet paper. Either one of them might let your finger to poke through. If it doesn't, then that's the one that works for you.

I more or less meant neither can be proven to be superior to the other, but that I personally prefer the FEs. Only reason I'm going to go with a 408 stroker in the future is price and ease of install really. If I had a REAL job I'd go big with a 557 stroker and a 5spd to make them MPGs LOL Jk that's a dumb idea.

351.
A 302 has almost no space between the deck and the pump. (as you can see above)

Jim, don't you just love people who jump in at the end of a thread without reading any of the previous posts?

FE's have 5 valve cover bolt holes per side / 221/260/289/302/351W have 6 / 429/460 have 7 / 351C/351M/400 have 8.

Bill (V), If it was one of Gary's threads, it's almost to be expected!

I know far less than many of you on this forum, but I am always learning.
