Every once in awhile I see a thread like this and it scares me. Really sorry to hear about the failure and subsequent wreck, that SUCKS.

That depends on tools. I attempted one a year ago with hand tools and quickly realized why everyone hates this job. I applied my dremel to the rental puller so I could use my impact wrench and it came right off. Two months ago it took me less than 5 minutes with a Lisle puller and my IR impact wrench. If you have air tools it's a piece of cake. If not it's worth either buying a compressor and impact wrench or paying someone else to do it.
I would NOT attempt that job without an impact wrench.
I know ford doesn't want to hear about it but it would be nice to have a recall on something like this. I would hate to have my steering (or anyones) fall apart while driving down the road with the family inside and 10K# in tow in rush hour traffic.
