Actually, this is about the 4th case of this within a year on FTE. Glad no one got hurt but this is yet another reminder to everyone to check for cracks and new rust forming! How bad is the truck?
Shaft broke off , then pitman fell with broken part off shaft still tight in it,how would you see this rusting , there is not 1/4" beteewn pitman arm & box? Thanks barry
Is it time to star doing NDT with the steering box?
NDT (Nondestructive testing) or if you like NDI (Nondestructive inspection)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondestructive_testingThe only problem is you do need to remove the box and the
selector shaft to check it right. I guess you could get away with
only removing the pitman arm and checking the shaft there.
The thing is with a crack you can find that with a dye penetrant kit.
You would have to pull the pitman arm and clean the shaft to use the
stuff and it not that expensive of a kit. Clean Spray on and look.
Well this is more to it but not really much. Easy DIY job.
if you think its a easy job you aint done it lately shaft broke off clean ,no rust ,no darkspots the spline was twisted alittle right at the box, the big prob.was with the new box installed the toe in was off like a inch something bent guess sent it on to shop bseg barry
