I've searched and read, searched more and read more, and can't seem to find a thread with my exact problem, or the part # I need.
When I select 4x4H, the hubs don't lock and air goes to defrost. I had my wife sit in the cab as I pulled & plugged various vac lines. I worked my way up from the hubs to the PVHS. I pulled the vac line off the PVHS and plugged the nipple at the PVHS, and the air still went to defrost. I assume this means I'm losing the vacuum inside the PVHS, correct?
Does anyone have a part # and/or know of a write-up for replacing the PVHS?
Also, I need to find a tailgate protector (the plastic cap on top of the tailgate), but can't find a part #. Anyone know it?
Here's a useful [LINK] for troubleshooting the vacuum lines.
I replaced my PVH as one of my first repairs. I use a MityVac to test every component for holding vacuum. If you don't have a Mity Vac (with a gauge) yet, I'd strongly urge you to get one... I use it almost every time I pop the hood.
You can pinch hoses until the air vents to the floor, but it takes several seconds for the vacuum to build in the reservoir. Give plenty of time for a reaction with each test.
I went to the dealership to to get the PVH... I think it was $75. I also found cracked/leaking vacuum lines at the fittings behind the wheels. I cut about an inch and a half off the wheel end of the hose and reinstalled them. No leaks for a very long time.
Thanks, Tugly. During my searches, I ready plenty of your posts about this, and they were very helpful. BTW, I read a few of your posts regarding 20+mpg. When I bought this truck it was getting 13mpg, and I'm now getting 21-23mpg. I replaced the air filter (still running the stock filter and box), changed the oil with Shell T-6, and installed a DP Tuner. In 80E, I get 19mpg, but in 60T I'm getting 21-23 and the transmission seems to shift a lot smoother in 60T.
Like I said, I plugged the nipple on the solenoid that leads to the hubs, and never could get the air off of defrost. There's still a chance I have other leaks further down the system, but I think my first leak is at the solenoid.
Do you happen to have the part # for the PVHS? I checked at Napa, and I think they have the correct part, but it was somewhere around $200.

Thank you! I'm really glad others can benefit from my misadventures. If it weren't for the fine folk at FTE, I'd be out of the diesel world by now (most likely). I'm just glad I can pay it back and forward. Oh... don't trust the overhead. You need to hand-calculate at each fillup. You should be getting 17-19, depending on your driving situation.

Thanks for the part numbers! Most of my driving is on the flat interstates in east Texas, so it's pretty easy driving for me and my truck with cruise control. Our highest elevations are over-passes.

Warm weather, flat roads, open highway with CC... ideal for good MPG. You just might pop 20, depending on your speed, tires, and if you have no lift.
