Trailer wires

I have a 1999 Mountaineer.
Behind the left rear taillight is a factory connector for a flat 4 way trailer connector.
There is a 6 wire plug behind the right rear taillight.
What is it for?
Is this vehicle factory wired for an electric brake?
If so , where is the plug for the control unit?
Thanks

There were two locations that were common for the factory trailer brake wiring, either under the dash on the driver's side (above the accelerator pedal) or, as mentioned above, behind the glove box.

I'm not sure what the 6-wire plug under the right rear taillight is for.

Thanks for you're advice.
I have not been able to locate an unused plug or wiring behind the glove box or under the drivers side dash.
I contacted a local Ford dealer and they looked at schematics for my vehicle and don't show either plug located at rear of vehicle.
They think it was installed by a dealership.
I checked etrailer.com and they have the exact plug in to a flat 4 way trailer hook up.
The vehicle came with this 4 way and instructions for installing.
Both of these plugs are identical except for the number of wires.
They are both installed in the exact way on either side of vehicle.
If I can I will check with voltmeter.

not sure what year your explorer is, but to the best of my research, pre 2002 explorers are not wired for a brake controler. I looked and looked on mine, and there was not one to be found.

if you have the towing package, it is wired for trailer lights via the plug behind the Left tail light.

according to this: Cant Find trailer plug - Page 2 - Ford Explorer Ranger Enthusiasts "Serious Explorations"® The identical looking plug behind the Right tail light would be for backup sensors on cars so equipped, and dead ended if not used.

the trailer plug offered by hopkins: Ford / Mazda / Mercury Should be the one you need if you drive the 95-00. This is the one i used and there were no fitment issues.

i had to run dedicated wires for my brake controler, which was a pain.

Ahhh, good point. Now that I think back, I never did install a brake controller on my 2000 Mountaineer, just a hitch and the 4-pin. It had backup sensors which is probably why I never noticed the connector on the right side. I did put a brake controller in my 2004 Mountaineer and 2004 Aviator though, both of which was pre-wired. The Mountaineer was behind the glove box and the Aviator was above the accelerator. I keep forgetting about the 2004 Mountaineer I had....

Thanks for the help.
Looks like I'll have to run the wiring myself
