I want to put an electric brake hook up on my 96 F250. What is required to do this, how difficult and guess on time needed to do? right now I have the normal flat 4 prong trailer hook up. thanks.
My truck came with the controller pig tail in the glove box .. & under the dash in the center , there is a factory plug for it ...Not sure if its that way in the 250's ...
You will need to adapt the wiring to either the 6 prong round or 7 prong round plug and then just plug in a brake controller. Pretty much everything should plug in. I think all the trucks had the wiring in the loom already so it should be pretty much plug and play. The brake controller is for sure, and if you can find an OEM Ford trailer wiring harness, it should plug right into the connectors in the rear of the truck. It is surprisingly simple to do provided all the wiring is there, which I believe it is.
So everything should be included with the controller. Guess the receiver is a separate buy depending on what end needed. Hope its that easy, not going to count on it, there is some weird wiring done by PO's
Are you buying a new controller? If so, I believe you will have to buy the adapter to plug into your trucks wiring harness. The controllers I have were all used when I got them and already had the plug on them to connect to the wiring harness spliced into the wiring that comes out of the controller.
The bigger issue is to find the trailer wiring harness that plugs into the truck harness. From what I gather those are getting tough to find.
The guy I know at the parts store has one at his house he pulled from a 96 explorer. $25 for it. Guess I'll see how that looks. Hope I don't have to splice it together in the back
For $25 I would give it a shot for sure! And of course the more you spend for a brake controller, the better it will be. Tekonsha makes some good ones, but you can pick up some less expensive ones for a lot less coin.
I just bought a new controller for mine and bought the pigtail for it also. The guy at the camper place walked out to the truck and checked to make sure it was the correct pigtail for my truck. Just plug and play.... Works great. The old one was spliced into the brake switch wires on the pedal. Got rid of that mess.
