Trim coating

I have been polishing my 74 F100 tailgate trim and figured out pretty quick that I can polish through the first layer> am I going through a chrome plating or the clear coat on the aluminium? Thanks- also anyone in Alberta have a clean/cheap front left fender??

Should be just a clear coat. What are you polishing it with that you burned through the coating. Buffing old paint, clear coat with an electric buffer can be dangerous as the clear coat and paint is old and well worn. Plus the u.v. rays have weakened it. Elbow grease can be to much on original paint sometimes, be careful or respray.

I was using a electric buffing wheel with a polishing disc and it took the first layer off very easily. I will hand polish from here on out.
