I have searched this sight everywhere and can not find the answer . I have a 77 F100 and have removed the tailgate chrome trim piece to repolish and have found the painted part of it is also peeling so i wanted to know if i should buff the whole trim piece then repaint the parts that were painted or should i repaint then buff the chrome ( I have already removed all the peeling paint ) and should i use a special paint?
Unless you have a custom chrome piece , I think the trim on the later 70's ford trucks were anodized aluminum. Not a golden rule though. I have the same problem with my race track molding on my 79. I am restoring my moldings now, and I can readily see the issue with the painted black stripe in the middle of the trim. If we strip the anodized coating off, sand ,buff and polish the trim first, then the paint will not stick to the slick surface. ...
If we paint first , then we will have to try to sand, buff, polish, then paint around the black stripe. Impossible task. So, I am going to go the auto refinishers after I polish my moldings and buy black vinyl pinstriping tape. If it fades or gets damaged later, I will just peel and stick on another one. jmo tho
