I'm prepping my '77 F150 Supercab for paint. I've removed the trim, upper, lower, tailgate, etc. My first thought was to buff it back up to reinstall. I noticed most of the anodizing has worn off. My options are: don't put them back on at all, polish them up, reinstall and keep buffing them up, polish and then clear coat, or have them dipped and/or anodized again. My '78 has no trim and I want this one to have it. I don't like the idea of all the upkeep to keep them polished. I would not be happy when the clear coat starts to chip and peel. And i don't want to pay to have them professionally treated.
Does anyone have any experience with painting the trim? I was thinking satin black with clear coat. How would it hold up on the aluminum trim? I'm wondering if temperature variations would cause it to expand and contract, then crack the paint. Given that they are small pieces of trim. Any pros/cons to this idea? I figure if I strip them down real well and scuff them up to hold paint, my painter can knock it out quickly while painting the truck.
I guess my question is more, How will the aluminum trim hold up painted, instead of how will it look.
BTW, I plan to go satin black if I paint it. I bought some PlastiDip to see how I like it, then I can just peel it off to paint. I have even thought of just using the PlastiDip, but I'm told it may only last a few years. Still an option though.
I had a similar idea that I may try on the trim from my parts truck. I was thinking of polishing the trim and then applying Dupli-Color :: Metalcast paint. They have a smoke color that might look good against satin black.
