A friend of mine is working on a 1930 fiberglass bodied model A which is mounted on a 1980 Ford Pinto frame and power plant. He is having problems with the charging system and has replaced the alternator and regulater without any success. Most of the time its the Auto zone Alternater that is not charging.
Does anybody know of a one wire (Regulater enclosed) alternater that he can install ? It has a pully system rater than the serpentine belt system.
Any help would be appreciated.
do a search for "3g upgrade" and you'll have plenty to read. the 3g isn't quite a 1-wire, but has an internal regulator, and wiring consists of a charge wire and a plug with 2 small wires, one of which can go right back to the charge wire, and the other to a switched power wire in the old alternator harness.
most of us get them from mid-90s tauruses in the junkyard for cheap.
Any of the older GM alternators would work also. One from a 79 Monte Carlo would only need two wires, the large one going to the battery and a smaller one going to the dash with a "gen" light hooked to it, and then the other side of the light goes to the ignition switch power.
The "3G upgrade" is usually for people who need a lot of power, and those alternators can be large. All of the 130 amp models are serpentine pulley because they take so much power to run them. Some of the smaller 95 amp units may come with a v-belt pulley. Of course you can swap pulleys around also.
ask for a 10si delco with a self exciting regulator can get them at Napa etc. only one wire, the alternator that came on about 1973 and up G.M. cars and trucks.
Yep, why live with the cons of the one wire when you can add one more wire and have a "normal" working alternator. A one wire may be ok for a show car where you want a extra clean look, but I don't see the problem with adding one more wire to a alternator that you can get at any store and using it.
Thanks to all of your guys for responding so quick, I'll forward this information to my friend and let him make the final decision. The wiring in the car now was poorly done, and it also may be easier to just re-wire it.
But thanks again
