I must be doing something wrong

So i finally have all my parts and the time to put the intake and exhaust manifolds back on. First things first, rear exhaust manifold... what the hell. I've got a set of efi headers I found in a junk yard. On the manifold, neither of the 2 holes that the studs would go to match up. It fits in, but the only thing holding it up would be the nuts and washers from straight friction. This just seems wrong. I'm not sure where to go from here, I'll need to get a second set of hands, but if I tighten it down so that it'll stay I won't be able to mount the intake manifold.

Just spend half the day wrestling with it and now I'm just pissed.

Any tips from those who have done it already would be appreciated, I was hoping to get it started up today but looks like it'll have to wait.

Here's a couple pics of the manifold in question.

If you are installing on a carb head they don't have the holes for those bolts. Only EFI heads do.

You make L shaped brackets on a couple of the lower mounting bolts/studs to hold the manifolds in place.

Well that makes sense, I probably should have thought of that, just got really frustrated with it earlier today. Unfortunately no welder on hand, every time I think I've got this figured out, something else comes up that gets in the way.

Don't need a welder. If you can find the right size of angle iron or even pieces of scrap steel that's heavy enough. Just find something strong enough to hammer it over to bend it into an 90 degree bend or L shape.

You will need to cut them to length and drill a hole in them.

I'm not sure I follow you here. I just keep imagining a piece that fits over the stud, but I don't understand how its going to hold anything up, it'd just spin around; plus it'd get in the way of intake and exhaust manifold.

Sorry if I'm a little dim, I started this as a project to learn. Seems I keep ending up out of my depth of knowledge.

a second set of hands comes in really handy for this project.

Here I tried to do a quick sketch of what I'm talking about. You just need two small pieces of metal that have a 90 degree bend in them. The one side of the bend sits on the bottom ledge of the manifold by the mounting bolt notches. The other side has a hole that you stick the mounting bolt or stud thru. The bolts or studs/nuts & washers do all the clamping. These two little brackets just keep the manifold from sliding down.

I know it's a crappy sketch job on your picture but I hope it helps explain things better then I am.

Well, that makes ..... a lot of sense. Thanks for the sketch, I see exactly what you mean. Now just to find a few chunks of metal.

Thanks a lot for the advice, no more work is getting done this weekend, but I know exactly where to go from here.

when I have done this job, I found it was easiest to mt the forward exhaust manifold first by using the 1 bolt nearest the radiator hole to temporarily fasten and hold it. Then set the intake up allowing the dowel pin (assuming you are using one, if not get one) near the front to hold it on the front and secure it with the rearmost bolt. At this point you should have the front exhaust and the intake centered. just put the common bolts to these two pc's in place and snug them up. This means your intake and front exh is in place. Now set the rear exhaust in place and use your two hands to find common bolting point to the firmly installed intake.

Then slowly torque to value..

I assume you are using the properly sized bolts/studs and washers to secure this all. Even the stock bolts/washers will do just fine..

When you are done the exhaust manifolds will have three un-used exhaust manifold bolt holes on a carb'ed head install or if you are using a later EFI head..they will be all used.

That's odd..cuz when I went from log to the efi manifolds..I didn't have the holes on ny carbd head but everything was bolted down or had a bolt on the ears even with my offy intake

The EFI exhaust manifolds will bolt up just fine on carbed heads. But without adding the little brackets I was talking about the manifolds could drop and become misaligned with the ports. FrenchTown Flyer clued me into them a while back.
