Sam's NO START thread

Ok so here it is in a nut shell. I started the truck this morning to leave, let it warm up and decided not to use it so I shut it off.

I went out to move it to change the oil as we are going to Washington State for the Easter weekend and the truck will not start. No smoke no nothing. Here is what I have done so far.

1) I jumped the terminals on the GPR just to be sure it wasn't the problem. However I did not think this was the problem as I do not have any smoke.

2) Changed the CPS with the ford part I had in the glove box. Still no start but the tach moved ( I did not look to see if the tach moved with the original CPS). I bought another CPS from Napa and installed it and still no start and the tach still moves.

3) I check the ICP plug and I find it is wet with oil. I attempt to get the part but now Napa and Ford are closed. The other parts stores do not even list the ICP so I have to wait.

4) I check my fuel pressure and it is at 70PSI

5) I check all of my other connections and all look good.

6) I disconnect the IPR to see if there is a difference, still no start. I did the same with the ICP.

7) I checked the HPOP and it is full to the top of the hole.

8) I tested ALL of the fuses. I have a WTS light. I do not have a CEL.

9) I pulled the fuel filter and the bowl is full and the fuel is clean.

10) I purchased the Scan Gauge II and programmed it to read ICP and IPR as well as a couple of fun things...LOL

11) I connect the Scan Gauge and the reading are as follows:

IPR = 95.2
ICP = 219

The batteries are in excellent condition. While turning over, the Scan Guage shows 158 RPM.

The oil is in the hash marks and has about 2500 miles on it.

I do not know what a good reading should be on either the IPR or the ICP. I looked in the forums, but when you are discouraged it is hard to read clearly...LOL

Anyway, looking for some advice. Is there something else I should check?

Thank you guys for the help.

Hey Sam. As you know oil in the icp plug is bad, but it still should start with it unplugged if that was the problem. Do you have a spare ipr? I'm going to guess you could have a stuck ipr. It could also be a wiring problem to the ipr or idm, or could be the idm too. You could pop the idm off and check it for water.

I wish it were earlier in the week, I'd send you some spare parts to try and get you going for the weekend.

Yeah, check over the fuel bowl wiring harness.

How long have you cranked for?

I pulled the IDM last night and it is dry. All of thw wiring looks good. I will pull the PCM plug and see if it is coroded or something.

I have cranked it for a while. It really seems like a bad CPS so i will buy another one. It isn't a bad idea to have a couple of spares if thats not the problem.

It's not a bad idea for a couple spares. I just found out a couple weeks ago cleaning out the inside of mine, I have 4 spares. Um, that should be adequate.

Let us know if it fixes it Sam. I hope so. I'm still thinking maybe your ipr is stuck. Is it the original?

Yeah, I think I'd pull the IPR and check it.

If your checking this on the scan gauge without the ICP sensor plugged in, your seeing a default value, not actual pressure. If you want to see actual pressure you will have to have a mechanical HPOP guage on the oil rail. The scan gauge should be giving you a good reading with the ICP sensor plugged in, but when I get a low reading like you are, I like to double check it with the mechanical gauge just to verify.

So, it looks to me like it's not starting due to low ICP.. You need around 500psi ICP for the injectors to fire. Your building less than 250psi, so the injectors aren't firing. Hints the no smoke problem. I'd pull the IPR and clean it or swap in a known good one. If it still doesn't build pressure, you probably have a bad hpop.

I pulled the fuel filter again to clean the screen (this time during the daylight) and I found a bunch of little black floaties. Looks like a bad IPR. The ICP has oil in the plug so I will change that too. If the HPOP is bad then its time for a TE500.

How in the world do you pull the IPR without disassembling the entire top of the engine? I can barely see it down there. LOL

It's easier to get to with the fuel bowl out of the way, but you can get to it with everything still in place.. Unplug the connector, reach down with a wrench and spin the tin nut off, pull the solenoid off, 1 1/8" deep socket on the IPR, and it will be one or two clicks on the ratchet everytime. LOL No real way to explain it, just do it. Getting your hand in there to grab the IPR to either get it out or spin the new one in is the suck part.

Do I need to replace the IPR or can I just change the orings? As far as cleaning it, do I spray carb clean in it or what?

I have decided to pull the fuel bowl and wow, what a mess down there. I have had an oil leak for quite some time and I will fix that while I am down there too. The fuel lines from the pump to the bowl are cracked as well. It's just time to do some much needed maintenance to the truck. All I do is drive it.

You can actually disassemble the IPR and clean the parts inside piece by piece. You might see if you can find a write up with pics on it. If nothing else, I will check later. I've only done it once, but it was a few years ago and I don't really remember the parts inside. I know how to get it apart, just some channel locks with a rag around the barrel of the IPR being careful not to gall up the barrel, but don't remember how the parts went inside.
