Here are some of the parts I have replaced.
Spark plugs
Plug wires (twice in same week)
O2 sensors
Fuel filter
PCV (on valve cover)
Coil pack
Cleaned my k&n air filter
So up until last weekend my truck was bogging down and hesitating only while putting pressure on acceleration. Traced all vacuum lines and found a bad PCV. While replacing the PCV I had to move the coil pack out of my way, well when I went to put coil back when I plugged PCM wire back into coil, the coils connector broke. So I had no choice because its my only vehicle I was forced to drive it that way for two days until new coil arrived. Now that all the stumbling and bogging and hesitating is gone, truck is running better than it has in a while, but it does feel a little weaker on the power side. My check engine light is back on and still reading 171 and 174?? Anyone have any ideas on what my problem may be?
You probably still have the original problem which, 90% of the time, is a vacuum leak. You might wnt to clean your MAF since those oily filters often contaminate the sensor element due to over-oiling (hey, I know they said a little oil, but more is better, right?)
Plug your fault codes into the SEARCH box and you'll find HUNDREDS of posts and threads about them. Extremely common.
Do you think I should just do away with the oil air filter go back to paper? Yeah it's a real bummer I've done so much research on those two codes and they go a hundred different directions hah. A few people have told me to clean maf sensor while vehicle is running and spray electric contact cleaner towards it, is that true? Also thanks for the quick response, I guess I'll be tracing out some more vac lines today.
Okay I will pick up some cleaner in the morning and try it.. Also today I read a post about a ticking sound in the motor and one of the quick solutions was to check spark plugs. I checked them all and my #2 spark plug was half way screwed out.. And very fouled out. What causes it to screw out like that. And it seems now the ticking might have gotten louder. Any ideas as to what I am looking at now? Thanks
When i had 171-174 codes on the 5.4 motor, it was the small vacuum hoses to the EGR valve area. Hoses by exhaust manifold get hot and can crack and leak air.
What is a good method for checking exhaust manifold gasket for leaks. Gets hot pretty quick hah. Okay ill check all the EGR vac lines as well. What do you know about using carb cleaner to detect VAC leaks?
This morning I took an old water hose and cut a 3ft length off to help listen to my ticking problem. At first it sounded like it was coming from the exhaust so I moved the hose closer and got nothing. I just happened to put it on spark plug number 2 and its safe to say that is where it is coming from.. That is also the same plug I found half way unscrewed. Could it just be a fouled plug you think? I'm going to part store now to get a new one.
