How many miles before adding DEF

I got the 800 MTE on I-40 this evening.
Trip B is at 4,900 miles which is the last oil change and fill so I'll get a bit over 5,000 if I don't tow anything.
I'm going to let it count down for a bit if I stay in town so I can just fill it with 5 gal.
Do the pumps require that magnetic tool that used to be discussed or does it pump normally?
I thought about filling up at one of the truck stops this evening but wasn't sure about this and very quickly lost interest; just wanted to get home.
