well, I $%$%&ing did it. I drop the tappet into the block. It fell completely out of reach and sight. what the hell do I do now? help!
get a new tappet.... I have heard that the old one will just sit in the bottom of the pan....
You might try to look at where the dipstick goes into the pan.... there is a known leak point there and that says to me you can remove it and fish with a magnet.
Do note I am guessing from what I have read and have never done this. I do know you have to pull the engine to pull the pan....

how do I know that its made it to the pan. couldn't it be lodged in block somewhere and destroy the engine as soon as I start it.

Is almost impossible to know that, but I have read several cases like yours, and no one has reported any issues to my knowledge. They have left the tappet there and live with that.
One question, the harmonic ballancer was at TDC when this happended?
it was the new, I got the old one out no problem and I actually got the new one in also. but realized I couln't get to the hose clamp on th bottom hose on the filter side. so I was pulling it back off to tighten hose clamp and bam! the SOB fell off.
o.k. I turned the motor and heard it fall into the pan, thank god! or should I say thank you guys! So I have the tappet ffrom the old pump, it looks fine. can I use it and call it a good day after all. also to make sure this doesn't happen again could some one explain about the harmonic balancer, thanks again.
I went ahead and put the old tappet on the new pump and installed it. truck started fine all seems well. Thanks to all, and sorry about the stupid questions. I am learning as I go on this truck. this site has helped tremendously, the goal is to ask less and less stupid ones as I go but..., no promises, lol
"Harmonic balancer" is just another term for the crankshaft pulley. José wanted to know if the crank was at TDC.
And my apologies for stirring up all the drama in your thread; I honestly had no idea that, by re-iterating what the esteemed Mr. Action himself stated in another thread a year or so back (that turning the crank to a certain position only gives you a 50/50 chance of the lobe on the cam being in the right position), I would be swatting a hornet's nest. And to anyone I might have chased away from here, as I've been accused of, further apologies.
The added weight of the tappet sitting in your oil pan should have minimal effect on fuel economy....

I think you are and will be fine

Yes I wanted to know if the Harmonic balancer or crankshaft pulley was at TDC, because I remember that old thread about the 50/50 chance and if you put it at TDC you went in the bad 50%.
PS there are not stupid questions here, and we are always learning here in FTE.
