New Fuel Pump

I just installed a new Holly carb on a 79 351m. I wasnt getting any fuel to the new filter so I poped the fuel line off and no gas coming from the fuel pump. I ordered the new fuel pump and was wondering if there are any technical steps besides taking the old one off and putting the new one on. Btw I pulled the line going into the pump and just a very little gas came out. Shouldnt there be a stream of gas. No filters were connected except to the carb. Any advice is appreciated

There may be a crack or air leak in the suction line on the pump. This will cause the pump not to deliver fuel and is also a fire hazard. While you are changing the pump change out ALL of the rubber fuel lines. Check the lines all the way to the tank. I always put a little grease on the fuel pump lever.

when you go to fit the new pump to the engine, if the pump doesn't want to mate up well you'll need to turn the engine over until the fuel pump eccentric is on the low spot. then the pump will mate up and you can tighten the bolt/nut without breaking the ears off the new pump.

I always just inserted the bolts, jammed the pump up against the block to compress the spring, and then threaded the bolts in the rest of the way by hand. Too lazy to crawl out and turn the engine a bit or get my greasy fingers all over the fan belts etc....
