I have a problem getting my starter to engage. If I play with the shifter on the columm it will engage the starter and the engine will run. I thought it was the nuetral safety switch (which is in the auto trans) So I disconnected the shift linkage at the transmission and left it hanging, with the trans is park and the shifter in park, I then tried to start the truck. I still had to play with the shifter on the column to get it to start. I don't get this. The linkage was disconneted from trans and I still had to play with the shifter. Could there be a problem with the igntion switch that is at the base of the column? And all I'm really doing is just amusing myself thinking it is the nuetral safety switch?
Thanks
I had a similiar problem a few years ago and my shift tube had to be replaced since it was allowing too much movement within the column. I didn't do the work myself because I hate to deal with steering wheels etc...
don't know what year you have , but pull the panel under the column on the top of the column is the switch try turning the key and moving the switch or just see if the switch is loose. do you have tilt wheel.the shift tubes do break if you use the wheel as a handle to get in with, but not a real common problem.i'd guess the switch is loose
I replaced the ignition switch on the column today. It works great now. By moving the shift lever I was also moving the rod a little bit and this was enough to get the truck started. It was easy to do. I didn't have to lower the column as the book says, just remove the aluminium mount for the column and remove the switch. It took about 15 minutes. Best 15 minutes of work on that truck yet. Thanks for the suggestions
