Intro thread - 74 f350 parade float!

Hey all,

I'm happy to have found this resource - it seems like there are some very knowledgable folks on this forum!

Without further ado - I am the project lead on a parade float built on a 1974 F350 utility truck. She needs some love, she's a little ugly, but she gets by.

So far, we've managed to kill the syncros in the the transmission and collapse the front coil springs. She needs a full tune up and a thorough cleaning and then she'll be good to go for another season of slow-rolling.

Decoding the VIN to the point the internets have helped me, I've learned that it had a 390 with a 4bbl stock and that it was a chassis cab built in KC, Missouri. Any way to tease the transmission type out of the VIN? The door tag has a code of 27j, and the vin is f37mku01242. I also have a casting number from the transmission: 13894.

Transmission ID is the next step, since a transmission rebuild is the next step...

Anyhow, it's nice to make y'all's acquaintance!

Charlie

Sounds like it needs a new truck.

@privateer: THAT's not very nice! Hush, or she'll hear you!

j/k. We've got plans to transfer the art to a bigger chassis in the next year or so. But until we raise the money, the F350 will do just fine. It will be driven locally - limited to about a 100 mile radius and always with a chase vehicle - and trailered to any events further away than that. Realistically, it can limp through until next year without worrying TOO much, but none of us have the time to put into a three-hour process of troubleshooting every time it goes out...

So there you have it: Trany and tuning for this year, and chasing down somebody who will love it better than we can when the time comes to switch things up!

Thanks all,
C

Ha! I wondered if that impression might be raised.

No. I did spend two weeks with my FS engine on severity detail to Truckie, CA. That was AGES ago! And the Ford in question there was a 95 CAT-powered medium duty which spent most of its time on that trip in Reno having its high-pressure fuel lines replaced...

In this case Truckie is the name the F350 was given by the group of us working on the float.

Cheers,
Charlie

Usually only by people within the Brotherhood

Was just checking.

I am assigned to an Engine Company on the Volunteer Department at work.

Yup, I like your sig. You know what they say: All pyros aren't firefighters, but all firefighters are pyros! I was strictly Wildland - working for Smokey Bear, but I've moved on to other adrenaline junkie work - now I climb trees...

Be safe, have fun,
Charlie
