Redoing my exhaust

My exhaust has been rusting out and needs replacing. I was considering doing the same thing that I have now (1in 2out 40 series, exiting in the rear) because I like the sound, but now I'm thinking about doing true duals with pipes coming out in front of the rear tires. I've just got a couple of questions:

My truck came with a cat and I need to keep that for the truck to pass the visual inspection. I've considered finding some crapped out ones and chiseling the insides out, but I would consider just putting real ones on there like this: Dynomax 15026 Walker Dynomax Universal Catalytic Converters- 49-State (EPA)

Mufflers are the other thing. I like the sound of the 40 series, but I've noticed Summit has really good prices on their house brand. Does anyone have any experience with them? Summit Racing SUM-638222 - Summit Racing Street & Strip® Race Mufflers - Overview - SummitRacing.com

I'm hoping to get some Christmas money together so I can do this sometime in January.

In ohio, if it's over 25 years old, it doesn't need inspection, thus you don't need to worry about cats. I'd just hollow out two like you said and go with dual pipes. Summit also sells the thrush welded (original 40 copy, what I have on my truck) that are $32.95each give or take a few bucks now. My signature will bring you to my youtube channel and you can hear them if you'd like, but the quality is terrible and I don't rev it up too high.

Also if you don't have headers, now would be a good time to put a set on. Not a necessity though.

The rule is 35 in NC, not quite there I want to put a set of headers on, but its not in the budget. I just got a PM from a member offering me 2 used cats for $20 + shipping so I think I'll get those. The thrush welded mufflers sound good, so I'll go that route. Thanks.

Good luck, if your budget approves, maybe add an x-pipe in their. As long as you run both pipes over to the pass. side you can use one. It helps with the savaging effect that can generate more power. If I ever redo my exhaust i'll probably use one myself.

I might be able to squeeze one under the trans output shaft, but dang, those things are expensive.

Everything I'm seeing is twice that. I guess I could just make it my self.

I'd say go for it but they have to made in a certain way it it won't flow right and can make things worse. Never mind about the magnaflow I stand corrected. Here is what I'm talking about although it's almost $35, but it's also the diam. pipe you'd want to use for duals:

Got it, thanks. I'll definitely go with that if I can fit it.

I didn't have any trouble in Harrisburg by not having cats on mine. Actually, they did my exhaust for me. No hassles what so ever. PM me and I'll let you know where they are.

I think the cut-off point for not needing cats in NC is after '78 or '79. Figures...

I don't think it would make much difference. It might be worth a shot.

For $20+shipping for two used cats, I think I'll just throw those on there. I don't mind reducing my hydrocarbon emissions

So it looks like the list is as follows:

Thrush Welded Muffler (x2)- $77.85

Two used cats- $20+shipping

Flanges, pipe, bends, hangers, clamps- $?

I'd like to keep the system under $250 or even $200 if possible.

Since yer opting to dump the tips in front of the rear tires, consider 2.5-inch , J-bends, U-bends, and straight tubing from Jegs or Summit.

Using Jegs' prices for 2.5-inch aluminized tubing:

J Bend: $19 ea
U Bend: $17 ea
4-foot straight: $14 ea

I recommend fully welding the sytem except for where they can be disconnected and removed when necessary. In this case, opt for stainless OD/ID clamps ($10 ea).

Hangers: Universal steel strap hanger (Jegs PN 555-30815, $6) and tubing clamps from your local parts store.

Here's the system on my 73:
