Transmission ID
I'm working with a 74 f350 chassis-cab that needs a transmission rebuild.
Is there someplace in the vin to look to see what stock trany model came in this truck? The door plate has a "transmission code" of 27j
Privateer indicated this meant it was a Dana 70 with 4.10s and power steering.
The trany is a 4 speed, reverse is to the right and down, and the truck is a 2wd dually.
I have a casting number and the vin if that helps:
casting no: 13894
vin: f37mku01242
so far the vin decoding i've been able to get to online says cab and chassis with a 390 and a 4bbl built in KC, Missouri. Most all the vin decoding sites don't deal with trucks this old... I know with my 01 dodge I went in to the dealership and had them look the truck up in their computer. Is this possible with something this old?
Thanks!
Charlie

I had found and read them before. Based on the trany ID guide I had guessed it was the New Process trany as well, but I wasn't the one who crawled under and got the casting number, so...
And as far as the vin decoder goes, it appears the one functional link there is for decoding newer vehicles...

The NP 435 will have an aluminum top plate/shifter tower. The T-18/T-19 would have a cast iron top.
The other difference is how the shifter is held in. The NP435 will have a retainer cup that you have to push in and twist to release. The T-18/T-19's will have a cup that has threads and just unscrews.
