VIN has 11 digits, not one refers to what side mouldings (if any) these trucks came with. Example: F26YRQ00001: F26 = F250 4WD Pickup / Y = 360 / R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant / Q00,001 = 1973.
No such thing as a 'trim group.' Trim refers to upholstery. No way to determine from the VIN if it's a Custom, Ranger, Ranger XLT, or a (1978/79) Lariat
There is no moulding (or stripe) code stamped on the Warranty Plate like there is on much newer trucks that has it printed on the Certification Label.
Excepting XLT's and Lariats, it's difficult to determine what side mouldings (if any) these trucks came with.
Most Customs have no side mouldings of any kind, but Ford offered "Spring" (time) & myriad regional packages for Customs that included upper or upper & lower side mouldings, with/without wheel opening mouldings.
Rangers came with thin anodized aluminum upper side mouldings (no vinyl insert). Some have lower side mouldings, some don't. Some have wheel opening mouldings, some don't.
Race Track mouldings introduced in 1977 Ranger XLT's, used thru 1979. 1978/79 Lariats also came with these mouldings.
But, it's possible to find Race Tracks on 1973/76's, 1977/79 Rangers & Customs because people added them. People went to Ford parts counters, bought them individually.
I sold so many of these mouldings back then, I can still recall the price: 1977/79 MSRP for a complete set for R/C 8' Styleside: $300.00 + tax.
And btw: All side mouldings are anodized aluminum, no chrome steel side mouldings on these trucks, nor 1963/72's either.
Hmm .. so no designation in the Vin which says whether it is a "custom" or "ranger" ? If so the badges need to be correct for the trim if your trying to keep original, correct? So I guess the op just needs to know what trim is correct for the badges he has if what you say is correct ..
Yes, Race-Trac trim will go on any 73-79 truck but only came on 77-79 trucks. All you have to do is make the hole for it to go in and your ready to rock.
If you go to Dennis Carpenter's web site and download the online catelog, it has nice images of all the moldings and what clips/retainers are needed if you add or change moldings.
