With the input shaft spinning in thick oil, some energy is going to make to the output shaft.
You might check the oil and make sure it is still oil, and not more like tar.

Thick oil... Now that is great troubleshooting skills. I was totally stumped and was wondering if a gear had slipped out of the shift linkage or pins and was causing the engagement .... some how not fully engaged but maybe through the syncronizers..... I like your simplier explaination a lot better.
I know of one truck that had sawdust in the tranny. Sadly, I am related to the guy that put the dust in before selling. I bet that could cause this type problem.... now that you mentioned it, it is obvious. By the way, my relative got caught and paid a fine, court costs, etc.
The first thing I do with an old truck is replace all the oils, belts, and hoses (costs about $115) but is well worth it to ensure proper fills and no sawdust.
