i have no clue as to whats wrong cause i dont work with trannys that much. any help would be appreciated. its an automatic overdrive 302 tranny. all gears are forward. park=park R=use to be neutral now forward N=forward OD,D,1 those are good any suggestions?
Sounds to me like your linkage is out of whack. I would readjust the linkage and see what happens. Any chiltons, Hayes, etc manual should tell you how to check the linkage. Basically, just unbolt the linkage, shift the transmission by hand into park, put the gear selector into park, and then tighten the linkage back up.
Try that before you do any expensive tranny work.
the linkage was the first thing i checked and its fine. it only does this when the engine is running cause with the engine off i can shift it in neutral and it is neutral.
Sounds like one of my other vehicles (Nova...I know BAD ME!) that I have had when I replaced an automatic 2sp trany that had a floor shifter to a column type setup!
Coc-a-may-mee / M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E but it worked and ran too!
Most tranny shops will look things over and give a free estimate, in doing so you would at least know what the problem is and then be able to decide if you can fix it yourself or not. Just a thought.
