It only gets confusing when a gas motor sounds like a diesel but has no diesel markings.
If the engine has plug wires going to the side/top of the block, it's a gasser if not it's a diesel.
You can't know much less than my friend who "knows about cars". When I told him I got a diesel truck, he asked how they work. I started to tell him that it is compression ignition, and he looked surprised and said "Wait, diesels have pistons?" I almost died laughing
