Hey everybody I am new here and thought I'd make my first post. I am 16 years old and looking into buying my first ever vehicle. I have dreamed of owning a super duty ever since I was a little kid. I always loved diesels. The sound of the psd was always very appealing to me. I know someone who has an 05 or 06 f350 lariat crew cab srw, fx4. It has the 6.0 diesel. I might get to buy it in a couple years. It has been used for towing a 5th wheel, but in recent years the truck has been sitting in a garage collecting dust and is occasionally used. The truck is pretty clean and in very good shape. I know some of you will say go with an f150 or ranger, but to be honest, while the both trucks are good looking, I've always found the bold and aggressive look of the super duty to be more appealing. I would use this as a work truck as I thought about starting a business such as lawn service where I would be towing a lot. This truck would also be my daily driver. Yes I do know that fuel and maintenance is a little more expensive on a diesel then a regular gas.
So what do you guys think? Would this be an ideal truck for me to use for work and daily driving?
Thank you guys. I look forward to seeing your replies.
Get the truck that makes you happy. If that 6.0 is what turns you on, go for it. The truck in my sig is my daily driver, and I have never regretted it.

When you get a chance, drop down to the 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel forum here:6.0L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums and do some reading on the 6.0, its weaknesses and strong points, issues and fixes, etc. There's a wealth of reading in there so you'll be busy for a while.
On another note, I bought a new 2005 6.0 in late 2004. It was a great truck and served me well.
ON EDIT: On second thought, I've moved your thread to the 6.0L Powerstroke Diesel forum where you'll get more accurate information and better advice.
Just gotta think about when the 6.0 breaks down, if you will have enough cash to get it fixed properly. Or buy it with about 4-5 grand extra to perform necessary "bulletproof" fixes
Ask why that truck has been sitting for a few years....???? ANY vehicle that sits for that long is going to have some problems.... the 6.0 engine this this truck DOES NOT LIKE TO SIT! At the very least, the turbo will have to come out and be inspected for rust....after that, who knows.

It's been used recently. Not as much as before when it was newer, but it is used when towing is needed. the rig is also occasionally used for driving to the store. The truck was used to pick up a load of mulch and some rock for landscaping recently. It still gets a decent amount of use every year.

EXACTLY!
out of 14 different trucks and vans I have owned in the last 24yrs there was only one other that I can say i truly enjoyed as much as my 04 350 Crew cab 4x SRW. and the more I use this truck the more I love it.
You are so smart to learn about these rigs before buying one! Don't let anyone scare you off. I bought my 06 dully crew cab brand new off the lot. I've put 160,000 miles on it and it's still going strong. **** never been in the shop, no ones put a wrench on it but me. But I don't race it or drive it hard, I maintain it well also. If you take care of it , it will take care of you. Welcome to FTE' , I'll bet you are our youngest member

Thanks for the kind words. I do believe I know a little more about trucks than the average person my age. I don't know everything there is to know obviously, but I've been trying to learn up on it all.
Also, besides work, I would like to use the truck for driving cross country on vacations. Would this truck be ideal for driving 800 miles from KY to NC one way trip? I have read somewhere that diesels do pretty well driving long distances. Any truth to that?
Good is a relative term.... Yes it is good on the highway. I am guessing 14 mpg city and about 17 hwy on my vehicle and it loves it when I set the cruise at 75 and let it go.... on the other hand if you don't need a truck for the trip (hauling townig, picking up stuff or just plain work) there are a lot more cost effective vehicles out there. I love my truck but on a trip from florida to NC we save $100 at a minimum taking my wifes minivan.
Also, is fuel, maintenance and repairs on diesels terribly expensive? This is something I have researched, but I wanted a little more insight about it.
Thanks again guys!
EDIT: Just a side note: I initially wanted diesel because I was/am among the few crazies who liked diesels because of the noise of the engine and an ego boost. I still feel that way, BUT now I know that if diesel is what I wanted I would have the put it to work. I decided that I could eventually be in the lawn service business as I believe that would be something I'm good at.
Sorry I have to give this a bump. Anyway, If I may add, I'm not going to be modding the truck. I'm not into to the smoke stacks, lift kits, and exhaust systems. Trucks with that stuff to me look like they're for show and a play toy than an actual work horse. Mods would make the fuel economy worse right?
I would be using my potential dream rig for some kind of work and for daily/casual driving.

Not really, some mods CAN increase economy. But that's with taking it easy on the skinny pedal and driving like a normal person. I am right at 500hp to the rear tires, and as long as I stay out of the throttle it gets 18-19 highway. But its still fun and slightly required to blow the soot out from time to time.
