Help-installing aux fuel tank-vent line ?

Truck - 2008 F250 CCSB, 6.4

I am installing my new 60 gal auxilary fuel tank/tool box combo and have a question.

What is the best way to tap into the system for filling and a return line?

Here is what I am going to do unless someone has a better way or can tell me that this is a bad idea.....

I'm going to cut about 5" out of the vent tube pipe and install two brass reducing tee's for 3/8" fuel line. One for filling the tank and the other for overflow/recirculating when I forget to turn the pump off.

I will have the auxilary tank going into a solenoid valve, then the Carter 4070 pump, then a filter, then into the tee which will be spliced into the factory fill pipe's vent tube.

I am also going to drill and tap the aux tank's fill pipe for a vent to atmosphere.

Please let me know ASAP if you see any issues with this.

I also posted this in the diesel forumn but haven't received any feedback. Since there is more traffic here I'm hoping to get some input.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Sean

I bought a RDS # 72744 from Camping World. They had the best price I could find.

have you found a good source of hookups fittings specifically for this without having to mix and match your own?

One place you can go for fittings would be
Pilot Supplies and Aircraft Parts from Aircraft Spruce
You don't have to use stainless steel lines but all the AN fittings
make building it up easy. Just remember AN flair fittings are 37 degree
not 45 degree and they don't mix.
The people over at Spruce can help you get the right fittings. There are
also adaptor fittings from flair to pipe thread or barb.

thanks for the link yahiko ....im always looking for sources.....ATI just emailed me back and said they have the fitting I was refering too in case anyone else is wondering...the diesel filler neck adapters often advertised are too big but they have one that fits the smaller v10s gas filler neck

so yahiko do you fly

Nope, can't get the medical How ever I do wrench on them A & P.
But right now with the back issues and surgery I'm not doing much
right now. If the fix that the Dr did in Feb holds and I do well I
may be back to work this time next year.

Took section of (if I remember correctly) 1 1/2" tubing an welded in a 3/8" tee. Removed a section of the fill pipe and inserted this in it's place.
I installed a 12vdc, 3/8" solenoid and hooked that to my upfitter switch.
These trucks are not a closed fuel sys. I just vented the tank at the top and routed the hose into the stake bed hole and down. I also put in a cotton ball to keep most of the fuel from venting in a turn but air passes just fine.
3 tanks no problems. Use the upfitter switches and the solenoid will close when the truck is off.
FYI My 06 F350 does not burn fuel faster than it will replenish, so I watch it while driving. That's thru a 3/8" solenoid valve which necks down to less than 1/4"

The hardest thing to find has been a reducing tee that is barbed, 3/4"x3/4"x3/8". The only one I have found is called a shark fitting found at home improvement stores. The problem with this fitting is the 3/4 sides are not actually 3/4 or 0.75", they are 0.687.

The vent pipe on the factory tank is actually 0.75", so the only type of hose that would seal both the factory vent pipe and the smaller reducing tees is a soft rubber type hose that I have't found yet, but granted I haven't looked much either.

The fill pipe on my 2008 is very strange to say the least. It's nothing like the older style trucks. It is very long... goes all the way to the frame before turning into hose and is also a very odd size.

My original plan was to cut a few inches off the end of the fill pipe and replace that with a short section of pipe after welding two couplings onto it for hose barbs, but due to the strange shape and size I tossed that plan out the window and figured that using the vent pipe looks easier.

So I take it that there aren't any issues in using the vent pipe for filling and fuel return lines?
