7.8L Injection Pump Help

I have a friend who removed his injection pump without setting the engine at #1 TDC. He now has a rebuilt injection pump and needs to install it. How do you set this engine to #1 TDC. I see the timing bracket on the harmonic balancer, but the slot for the pin to drop into is large and it will drop in on every roatation. Thanks for any help.

He's talking about one of them Brazilians F250... The little experience I have with it doesn't lend myself to comment on the op's issue though Im afraid...

Yes it is a Brazil motor. I haven't been able to find much on getting the timing set to #1. Especially with fuel pump removed. I might resort to pulling the valve cover or coming up with something to get the injector out. I was just hoping for an easier way.

Pulling the no 1 cover is a good idea. at least then you will be able to see when both valves are closed and reference that to your marks on the balancer

Make sure that it's at TDC. like mentioned before. Then, back it off to the desired degrees of timing(go 3-4* more than stock). There's a part on the pump to pin it at #1 cyl. I dont remember off hand where that is, but I think it's about half way back, and about 2" from the bottom. A little more timing will wake it up a little, and help mpg.

Thanks. The pump is supposed to be done at the rebuilder tomorrow, (Wed) not sure when I can get down there to help him put it back on. I know he isn't interested in turning it up any. He is retired and just interested in reviving some pieces of equipment and trucks so they can be sold. Most of the stuff has been sitting for years.

I finally got back down to the truck. I saw no timing port for the pump other than a hole to align a 1/4" drill bit in the very front of the pump before the gear gets installed. I pulled the valve cover and got #1 at TDC (I think). It took forever to get fuel at all the injectors, but some compressed air helped. Once fuel was shooting good at all injectors, I tightened them up and I am unable to get any smoke. I have some coming out of the valves (cover is still off), but nothing out of the exhaust. The engine doesn't even want to try and start. I know the timing must be off, I would at least have smoke. I am at a loss as to what to do. With the #1 injector line off and turning the engine over, you can see the fuel pump at what appears to be the correct time for the intake valve moving. Another forum, I was told that #6 needs to be rocking for #1 to be on the power stroke. Any ideas???? Thanks.

Better late than never. The truck is running. I pulled the valve cover, got the engine rocking on #6, aligned the pin on the harmonic balancer. I then removed the gear on the injection pump and aligned the timing pin. I installed the gear hand tight and advanced the timing about halfway. Tightened the bolts, and finally it ran. One note, make sure the fuel shut off solenoid is adjusted so that it fully retracts when starting, if not, the hold coil will not hold it in and the engine will cut off as soon as it starts!

Ford has a i6 7.8 engine here, in bigger trucks.
The brazilian super duty diesel is an inline 6 6.4L ironically.

Yes they did, and they were made in Brazil along with the smaller 6.6L inline. Are you referring to superduty p/'s? The 7.8 and 6.6 were for medium trucks like L8000s and the Cargo series cabovers. If they made any of those engines stateside, it's the first I've heard of it...
