Injection Pump??
Howdy,
I have a 93 F250 7.3L Diesel N/A with 160,000mi.
The other day I noticed a small amount of diesel under the injection pump
so, I cleaned it up and ran it for a day. I checked it again and found more diesel.
Is this a sign of the injection pump failing? Does it have a weep hole like the lift pump? If so where is it?
I also think the timing maybe a little off, if I have it advanced will I have to worry about egts even though I don’t have a turbo?
Thanks,
Gr8ride

The injection pump does have a weep hole in the bottom of the neck where it mounts to the tower. Use a rag and wrap it down around the neck and you can dry that area...run the engine again and stick your finger down under there to feel the leak.
Dont change the timing with the engine running. You can change it, but dont go beyond the width of the timing mark, that would be around 2 degrees or so either way.

Injection Pump??
I have decided to replace the injection pump but, was wondering if there are any tips or tricks that anyone knows of that might make things go along a little more smoothly?
Thanks,

DONT REMOVE THE TOWER COVER WITH THE PUMP!!!!!!!!! take the pump out of the back of the tower and leave the drive gear on the engine. There are 3 small 8 point bolts inside the tower cover - remove by taking off the little front cover plate. Remove the pump as a whole assembly - fuel lines and all. It will look like a big butterfly and reinstall it the same way. It will take some time priming the fuel to the pump. Be patient and be sure to give the starter a breather.
Let us know how you make out.

Injection Pump??
Howdy,
I have just a couple more questions. How can you tell if the new injection pump is in the right position to open the injectors in the right order? Is it like a distributor where you have to line the rotor up to fire with number 1 cylinder? If so how do I do this?
Or, do I just bolt it in place and it will be right?
Also, which direction do you turn the injection pump to advance it clockwise or counter clockwise?
Thanks,
Gr8ride

Injection Pump??
Can anyone tell me what type of bolt heads are used on the three bolts that attach the injection pump to the drive gear? I thought it was female torx but that didn’t work.
Are there metric torx and english torx?
HELP!
Thanks,

Let see how good my memory is... I think they are 5/16" 12 point, not sure about the 5/16" part but they are 12 point not torx.

what argve said !
The pump will only mount one way. There is a slot in the pump drive and a dowel on the drive gear. You can fine tune it after mounting it using the marks along the neck. Dont put the pump indicator any more than the width of the indicator from the indicator on the neck.
DONT REMOVE THE TOWER CASING FROM THE ENGINE !!

Injection Pump??
Howdy,
You guys where right, it was 5/16'' 12 point. Now the problem was finding one, nobody had one in stock, other places didn't know what one was, but I was able to finally order one which took two days
. Then I didn't have the injection pump wrench to get the three pump mounting nuts off. So I started looking for one, I tried all the local stores and they couldn't get one. Then I looked for a 60 degree offset wrench and once more no one had it or anything like it. So I figured I would try and order the pump wrench from Ford since I have the tools part number. So I walk up to the parts counter and show him a picture of the wrench and the part number. The guy looks at it and told me we can't order any tools. I started to say so what do you do when you need tools, but just shut my mouth.
So I pulled out my trusty cell phone used speed dial 6 and called the Snap on guy and found that he was about 40 miles away, so off I go again. I explained what I needed to him, and he looked through all his books but couldn’t find anything like it. So I asked if he had a 9/16’’ 60 degree offset open end wrench, and sure enough he did. I asked how much do I owe you. His answer was $32 (OUCH):-staun . So $35 in tools, 4 days and 200 miles later I had all the tools to take the pump off. I got home and changed out pumps in about two hours. It did take a little time to get it primed, but as soon as it got a little fuel it fired right up and was just as smooth as can be. Now it has a lot more power and if I get on it hard I get nice black smoke, as long as I have owned the truck it has never had black smoke not even when pulling 10,000 pounds up a hill.
Bilder12 why shouldn’t you take the tower casing off? I didn’t take it off but was just wondering.
I want to thank both of you guys I couldn’t have done it with out you.
Thanks again.

Injection Pump??
When you remove the tower , you remove the drive gear with the pump and that MESSES UP THE TIMING. It can be fixed but takes time to find the timing marks. Congratulations on the first one. You could have made the 9/16 wrench you needed to remove the mounting nuts for the pump. I took an old 9/16 wrench to the grinder and made what I needed and only had to grind some of the wrench away to fit around a nut or bolt, cant remember for sure , but it worked like a charm. Glad you're happy !!
