injection pump timing question
I just swapped engines in my 88 f250 with a low mileage 7.3l. I had the injection pump and the pump housing off because i thought i could put it back together with no problem. I put the mark on the crank to TDC and made sure the cam was in the right position. then i put the dowel on the pump gear in the 4'clock position. Anyway it starts and runs good but the engine is loud and it's making to much black smoke. the marks on the injection pump and pump cover line up. The question is, would the motor run as good as it does with the pump gear 1 tooth off? it seems like the timing is to far advanced. which way do you move the pump to retard the timing?

To retard the timing, with the engine not running, loosen the 3 bolts that hold the IP to the cover, and turn the pump towards the drivers side of the truck. Then tighted the nuts down. A little movement goes a long way, try turning the pump so the lines move about a dime's width at a time.
