My tank is officially topped of and I am showing ¼ tank on the gauge. I see movement when I turn the ignition on and off, so it appears the gauge itself may have some function…at this point I am thinking the sender unit in the tank may be culprit. I have the dual tank set up and only the rear or aft as referred to I think is used.
Disconnect the wire at the sending unit. Ground the wire that goes to the gauge. With the ignition "on" the gauge should swing all the way to "full". If it doesn't then you probably have a gauge problem. If it swings to "full", then either a sender or ground problem. The small black wire is the ground so that's easy to check.
Seeing as the gauge moves a little, there's a good chance the float has cracked and filled with gas, a sunken float.
If you find out the sender itself is okay and it's the float, Dennis Carpenter has a float that will never sink and it $5.00. The float is easy to change (once the sender is out), it just clips to the float arm.
Mike, thanks again for your help. Makes total sense, i will check everything you stated out.
I am curious to know, is that rear tanks sender on the top of the tank? Wish I did not top off today! Trying to fill with the gas nozzle and limiting overspill...wow did that suck...

The original float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together. Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float settles to the bottom of the tank.
The float is the same for all 1957/79 FoMoCo vehicles. The original copper float (COAZ-9202-B) is available from Ford.
Thanks Numberdummy. You experienced folks here are really appreciated. That makes sense about the two piece design, I mean it's got to be my problem. I am at a full tank of fuel now and the gauge registeres at about a quarter..so if the float is filled up...it would make sense that it's trying to rise. I bet the cluster is fine!
I'm limited with nice weather at this time of year to get outside and tinker with things, its like a river with all the snow melting and now rain.
I think I will order a few of the floats from Dennis Carpenter...once piece makes sense!
Its probably $158.52 now if the original is even still avaliable!
Is that Aft or rear tank is what 19 gallons?
I have that auxiliary tank which is not even hooked up, and thankfully I am quite sure its dry...that one uses a whole different sender wouldn't you think?

Yeah, the aft axle tank is considered to be 19 1/2 gal. You're correct, the mid-ship mounted tank take a different sender.
