Racor makes the filters that are in the motorcraft boxes.
Those same filters are put in the plain white International boxes.
If another manufacturer has a licensing agreement with Racor they can put the racor filter in their box too. Example: The Fram oil filter (but only until recently). When the agreement ran out they had to stop selling the Racor filter and now their boxes have a similar style filter in them ... but it's not the right one.
Motorcraft or Ford does not have a factory of their own employees making filters. They are made by another company (in this case Racor) and then put in a motorcraft box.
Same thing with the air filter which is made by The Donaldson Company Inc. Or the tranny filter which is made by NTZ Micro Filtration Company.
I have a box each of Racor and Motorcraft fuel filters sitting on my shelf right now, I've been meaning to take pics and post up the identicality of them. The only difference is the Motorcraft box looks like you'd find it on a shelf, the Racor box is plain white.
Once the patent numbers on the bottom match you'll be fine. That's one thing they can't mess with. I keep a photo of the bottom of the filter on my cell phone incase I ever have to double check when I'm in the store.
By the way ... always open the box in the store and confirm it is the correct filter in the correct box, and that the plastic bag with the o-ring is in the box too. The bag should have a folded piece of white paper for instructions and an o-ring that's about 4" diameter, something like that.
