Some kind of insulating heat shield on the starter could be beneficial as well. Or even swapping out the direct drive starter you have to one of the later style compact mini starters. I don't have headers, but I do notice mine starts faster after I did this swap.
Thanks. I've decided I'm going to do up it to a thicker gauge. That may not help the issue much. I know I still need to deal with the heat issue, but the thicker gauge can't do it any harm. Plus the old wire is 25 years old, and it could also have some corrosion in it.
You can bet if they are that old they need to be replaced. Going to 2 G will help with voltage drop, and I bet if you strip the cable back you will find it to be a unpleasant sight.

Yeah, my voltage drops to 9.18 when cranking... I'm going to check tomorrow on what gauge is used on the older diesels too. Probably 2 gauge, but I'm interested to see.
Is that voltage drop when the starter is cold or when it is hot. You can buy heat tape fairly cheap from Jegs or Summit. That would be the cheapest I believe & see if that doesn't solve your issue unless you have heavier cable laying around.
Craig.

I do have some heavy wire, just have to get terminal ends.
I've seen heat "blankets" for starters from Summit and other places. I think I'm going to throw on some foil tape tomorrow, and maybe try to make my own guard. I think a heat shield/guard would work better than a wrap or "blanket". I've seen the actual heat shields (usually aluminum) from Summit and others, but I have a tight space to fit it so I think I'd like to make my own to ensure a good fit.
This is what I was thinking then space isn't that much of an issue. I guess the pictures didn't copy.

Put some shiny aluminum tape around the starter, and it helped it to deflect heat a little bit. I got some thin aluminum to try to make a heat shield with.
I had this problem with my 90 F250 with the 5.8. Heat shields on the starter did not help. header wrap on the exhaust didn't work. Finally out of desperation I ran a battery cable directly from one of the starter mounting bolts, directly to the frame. That was about three yrs ago havent had a problem since.

Thanks. Might just try that. I can keep my timing set low and "hot starts" aren't an issue. It's just an issue when I have the timing set how I like it.
Going to be running a ground wire from starter to frame, and a heavier gauge hot wire to the starter. Also going to make an aluminum heat shield for the starter.
Just a little of the ton of stuff I have to get done on the truck, lol. Also have to replace power steering pressure hose and work on the back brakes. I'll probable put in a PS fluid cooler too since I got one for free that's like new. I'll probably be replacing the tranny cooler soon too. Got so much to do.

The best tranny cooler I have ever used is the B&M SuperCooler. They are small with High BTU cooling & fairly cheap. The ones I have bought were $50.00. I have owned three of them two on Chevy Blazer 4x4 & one on a Jeep GC 5.9 Limited.

Thanks! That's the one I was going to pick up. The one I've got leaks a tiny bit. Doesn't leak enough to drip on the ground, but it stays wet with tranny fluid. Not a big deal, but I'd like to have a new one.
