When I tried to start my truck today it would only just turn over slowly then stop, like the compression was too much for a weak battery. (Battery if fully charged).Then I noticed a burning smell.Looked under the bonnet and the cable that runs from the starter solinoid to starter was smokin and was hot enough that it melted the solder in the joint. What will cause this . Have I got a bad battery or solinoid or starter. Its a 240 I6 in a 65 f 350.

Sounds like either bad connections at your cables ( ground, etc...) or your starter is on the way out. Clean all connections and try again. If the cable get hot like that again, replace the starter.

Just being loose can cause connections to arc. As previously stated, check them all. You can disconnect the starter side of the solinoid and see if the situation repeats itself and if it does the problem is not on the starter side. The old process of elimination, you get the pic!

checked all connections and it turns out the nut on the starter side of the solenoid was tight but not actualy clamping the cable end thus creating an arc. When I tried to undo said nut, it broke off. So , new solenoid and $25 bucks later , it lives and breaths again. Thanx guys

I'm always glad when it is something simple! Glad you are back on the road.
I might get a chance to get mine out in the morning before the PM rains but snow is in the forcast so it will be up for the winter pretty soon. Spring is a long time away!!
