weird cool down

Hey all,
Yesterday I was traveling up a mountain and eot got pretty warm @ 220. That's the highest I've ever had it go. It is a pretty steep pass but I have never had a problem or issue like this before. So temps were pretty high since you go 4K in about 15 miles but my issue is on the down slope. I was on the decline of the mountain and my ect went down to 185 while my eot was still at 207! This made me freak out but it leveled out after about 5 minutes. Am i being to paranoid or what. Ive never had my ect/eot out of 10 degrees since I rebuilt the engine.

Oil always takes longer to cool down than coolant.

The fact that it cooled down shows your oil cooler is working.

PARANOID!!!! On the verge of being a HYPOCHONDRIAC!!!!

Just kidding!!!!!!

Yes, you will see the ECT drop dramatically on the down hill side. Especially this time of year. It does take a little bit before the EOT will stabilize from those temps.

Climbing the Cascades in the summer can really screw with a 6.0 owners head also!

I have had my EOT as high as 234* and my ECT hit 220* during the same climb. Fan kicks on and my ECT will drop during the climb and EOT will still be up there at 234*. My EOT was not there very long. But, it does get there. This while towing my Travel Trailer.

Hope this helps!!!

Were you empty? Which pass were you going over?

Last spring I did 410 to White pass and it did about the same thing.
You could hear the fan kick in and watch the ECT drop like a rock.
I later found out I needed a new T-stat and have not been the same route
yet. Also think about this the oil makes contact with the block in more places
where there is higher friction than the coolant does and all that metal will
take a bit to cool down.

I had a PM exchange with Benny a while back and he brought that point out. When his oil cooler started plugging the EOT temps would spike and stay until the engine was shut-off for an extended period of time.

If the temp difference is, for example 8 degrees cruising on the highway and you pull off and putz on down the street from the highway and the temps drop to 2-4 degree difference you know it's working.

Either way, after a hard pull or climb the EOT will spike and slowly fall, whereas the coolant will spike and quickly recover.

At least that's what I have experienced.

Thanks for confirming I'm not crazy! I was going up Stevens pass on hwy 2 but it was unseasonably warm this time of year. Guess I only go over the pass in the winter time when its normally 20 degrees. Thanks for the reply's
