Hello everyone. my 1988 460 is driving me crazy and i dont know what to do. awhile ago it would run and then stall out or rev down and die or just cut out for a second. i replaced the high pressure fuel pump, filter, pressure regulator, and after all that it, happend to be a bad relay. i also did a new distributor and ignition control module. that helped but its doing it again once it dies it takes awhile to start (between 5 minutes to 3 hours) i thought mabye it could be a bad "in tank" pump but could it also be electrical? i know its probably hard to diagnose but any help would be greatly appreciated and i can test or replace any suspected problems i just dont know where to start..
its from NAPA its "remanufactured" so i guess its not totally new but i dont think it would be the problem..would it?
YES. That would be the first thing on my suspect list. Rebuilt distributors have a terrible reputation. The first thing I would do is make sure you are losing spark when the engine quits and won't restart. If you find you are losing spark, you might try a new coil first. You already replaced the ignition module so you can rule that out.
Forget trying to test intermittent ignition components, unless you catch them in a dead state they will likely test good.
Oreilly Auto Parts has NEW distributors, I'm not sure if there would be one available for your truck. Or you could replace the stator in the distributor you have.
ok what ill do is put a test plug on and watch it for awhile and if the spark quits as the motor dies then its gotta be eletrical. i just dont get how it can stip working and then fire right up after sitting for a little bit
