for the compression and camshaft duration thing, its a matter of dynamic compression ratio. I am not a great expert at this, but if you google it you will find a lot of info on it. If you have a motor with low compression and a high overlap (lope), the overlap bleeds off a bunch of the peak cylinder pressure, and the motor is a dog. This is because it has no bottom end since the cam makes its power at high RPM, and it has no top end because it doesn't have the CR to make good peak cyl pressure. There are problems with high compression and a short duration cams too. The cylinder pressure at low RPMs without the overlap, causes detonation and dieseling.
