I have a 400 motor that is in a 78 bronco. I'm going to change the intake carb cam and probly put headers on it I was wondering what you guys would recommend? This is my first time doing somthing like this and I'm trying to learn
Decide what your going to use your truck for and select a cam designed to operate in the rpm range that your running your truck in. 400s are real torquey so take advantage of that. Also take into account your rear gear ratio and tire size. roller lifters are $$$$ but are well worth it so are roller rockers. stick with 1 5/8 long tube headers and a dual plane manifold. Eldebrock and Wieand are both good. Go to sticky in 335 forum for better advice, actually just read the forum.
I am planning the same swap. Two things I believe are important: 1) Change the timing set. The factory setup retarded cam timing and hurts performance 2) Change the valve springs to match the cam. Factory springs work with stock lift but no more.
The comp 262h is supposed to be good with a stockish engine.
Be carefull with that 268 cam. 400 heads don't breathe that well even with new valve springs and higher lift. You would probably do better with the 262. When ever you change a cam you should go to a double roller timing chain and follow the cam grinders timing specs. Avoid 351c 4v heads, to $$$$ to make work.
No probably about it! If you install a new cam and use the old lifters, the new cam more than likely won't last a 1000 miles.
You can install new lifter on a used cam but you can NEVER install used lifters on a new cam.
Cam manufacturers won't cover any warranty claims unless you install new lifters.
I used the Comp cams K kit 255 DEH with straight up timing and headers. It comes with matched springs, retainers & locks, cam, lifters, timing chain & gears It made a huge difference! Not too radical and really woke up the engine. My .02 cents....
I used the XE256 and wow it pulls like a diesel. I also have Tmyer pistons, weiand intake, four barrel carb and a recurved dizzy. If I were to do it again I would use a cam with similar specs but in a roller version. Good luck.
I will change the lifters. How does the 255 make it idle? I kind of want lopey idle but its not a huge deal to me
It might have a slight lope to the idle, but very little. I also changed my entire exhaust system at the time, so the exhaust tone changed quite a bit as well. This is also a dual pattern cam as well. I was happy with the result compared to stock.
What is your compression ratio? If it is stock, or near stock, (below 9:1) I would go with the 255 cam. A lopey idle and low CR do not go well together.
