Parts Help Please

1978 F250 4x4 400 Manual

1. Do you know how the oil dipstick tube is sealed into the oil pan??? Is it compression or O-ring, or threaded or both ???? mine is gooped up with silicon and i can not tell.
Are the oil tubes still available?? If so where!

2. I am getting ready to re-tape my harnesses and have noticed they have retainers (black or white) that are taped into the harness to aid in routing. Why are there two differnet colors? The harness that has the black retainers is not original to my truck (mine had all white). And where in the hell can i get these retainers???

3. I was reading prior posts learning as much as i can, i ran across a post that mentioned dealer installed A/C, this is a pic of what the guy posted

Click this bar to view the full image.

I have the same unit, in the post a part/or engineering # D1FZ-19A551-A is that for the whole bezel, is any or all of this bezel available????

Thanks a lot Pat

Here's the illustration of the A/C.
The part number you listed, D1FZ-19A551-A, is for the "Ford" logo on the name plate.
The entire bezel assy. is p/n D4TZ-19C784-A
Fits: 73-up F100-250 with integral dealer installed A/C w/o hang on glove box
Unfortunately no dealer or obsolete supplier has one of these either.

It's an interference fit at the oil pan.

On auto trans, they typically have an o-ring.

Thanks HIO. I knew the tubes were an interference fit for the 2WD pans because they're installed in the block. But because the tube goes into the pan on 4WD I wasn't sure. I've seen some Fords where the tube screws into the pan.
When I install the tubes in the block, I use a thin coating of Permatex #2 sealer on the end of the tube to help prevent leaks.

Yeah, it's metal to metal. The ID of the hole and the OD of the tube are almost the same. You should need to tap the tube in place. If it just slides in without any resistance, the interference fit is gone.
In this application I don't like using silicon. I prefer Permatex #2, this is a non-hardening sealer and works better than the silicon.

Dipstick tube on 400

I had my 400 pulled out to put in a f100 and while it was out i went ahead and redid all the gaskets timing chain and so on. I pulled the dipstick tube from the block and it was a real tight fit. I figured it had some kind of seal/o ring and it did have one now I can not find a replacement for it and the dipstick tube is loose. Went to parts store called ford and they all act like I'm retarded when I tell them it had one in it. Has anyone else ran into this and if so were you able to get a replacement?

yes I went through that one already on the 86 4×4, the one on the 400 I am talking about is a 2wd f100 and it has a front sump oil pump and the dipstick tube goes through the block right behind the alternator.
