Hello! Been following this site for a while and have learned a lot so thanks. Now I need help please. I bout a 73 f-250 or 350. Had dual rears. Anyway, the engine is not original and dates to a 1964. here are the numbers from it.
Looks like 6 or 8 for the first number and the last looks like a G. Hard to tell because there are 2 screw looking heads cast into the head covering half of each.
Except for the crank, trying to figure out what the rest of the motor is by casting numbers is a lesson in futility...
You have the stroke, only way to get the bore is to measure it. And the heads, who knows what's been done to those... and what Ford did at the factory. The only way to know for sure is to check them ...
I think this engine is a mutt. The stroke is a 390 or 427. Not exactly sure since using the dowel and a tape measure are not exact. I took the heads off and the cylinders are at 4'' by tape measure. The block has the ability to be cross drilled at the mains, so that could be a 353 or 390. But from what I can find, my numbers on the block do not belong to a 352. Things just do not make sense. I'm thinking I should have just built my D4TE 360 instead.
And my intake is a C4SE-9425-A. So I'm thinking this is a 390 out of a car. Any way to find out which so I can buy parts and such?
All in all I feel it was a good deal. Paid 650.00 for whole truck delivered 50 miles and it runs smooth, no smoke. It was sitting in a 73 f250 or 350 2x4 with a top loader. Using engine and trans to go in my 76 250 4x4 with c6. But, had i realized engine mount and exhaust manifold issues...i would have passed on it.

Does the intake have an oil fill tube at front left ? I'm thinking 64' Tbird etc.. or Mercury with the parts #'s you mention. Truck exhaust manifolds may have been used for ease. Only real difference will be the piston's pin height. The knubs on the crank cross bosses are just due to casting shortcuts. The cyl walls wont check out for sure. The mold was probably scrapped from the HiPo pile and refit due to bad tooling, wear, etc..
The oil fill tube is on the front right if you are sitting in truck. Nothing really makes sense with this engine to me. I've had a few in the past but it is like someone randomly placed parts together and called it an engine. Bought a timing set today and it was wrong. The cam gear sits too far forward and makes the chain angle towards the rear when crank gear is pushed all the way back. Problem is, there was not a spacer behind crank gear to begin with. I checked other sets and all look the same. I took the cam gear from my 360 FT and the hole is too big for the 390 cam. At a loss here???
The exhaust really baffles me too. My truck had the 360 with headers but I want manifolds. So, I set the engine in the bay and the passenger side manifold exits directly over the frame rail. It isn't a really odd manifold either. Just a plain straight back exit with a very slight down turn. almost not noticeable.
Another problem I have is from changing oil pans to a rear sump. Now I have a hole in the block where the front sump dipstick tube was.
I just can't wait to see what's in store for me when I go to put the top loader in where the c6 used to be!
