Getting ready at the end of March to pull motor for a oil pan change , while I have it out where I can get to everything easy I,m going to give it the once over . I see where someone said if engine has over 200,000 the injectors are just about ready to replace . Mine has 246,000 seems to be running ok with a litttle problem cold start ( checked everything seems ok ) do you think a total replacement is necessary for all eight injectors ? ouch !! any advise on cost or oem or aftermarket ? If I got to do it , it will be easyier while I have the engine out where I can stand next to it instead of laying up on it !!! Thanks Dean
"Mechanic" put the petal to the floor and it blew white smoke..
Says ..Up misfire on cyl 5.. See Ya .. WHAT????
Did the truck warm up ? Whats the temp in OK right now??
If you let the truck warm up .. other then burning a little oil does it seem to run OK and get you around ?
If your getting a hesitation/ virbation/misfire when its cold add a bottle of seafoam to the engine oil to thin it out.. 15-40 take a while to move when its cold..
It wont hurt... see if this helps the misfire...
Monitor engine oil every day so you know exactly how much it burns and when...
(write it down in a book!) Note when its smoking....
Burns when hot. .. burns when cold... smokes only at start ?? all this is helpful !

Actually getting some snow currently but we have been in the 30's and 40's lately. 20"s in northwest OK but just a trace in OKC. Possibility of 3" overnight but I doubt it. Everything (schools) closed early today because we were supposed to get snow. People freak out here.
So... you just want to get this running good enough to put on CL? Do you have a need for a bad-*** diesel, but maintaining it is too costly? Did this look appealing and you really like it, but you don't have the resources or the need for such a beast? Am I warm on any of these? This is not prying, this is my style of trying to learn what you really want to do about the truck and there are plenty of good people here to offer up useful input. Our input will be based on your true motivation.
I got the truck because it was what I was used to driving back home in Indiana. Regular cab 3/4 ton truck. I found this one, and I couldn't pass it up. It did help that it was the 7.3L as well. The only difference now is that, yes, I'm the one who has to maintain it, it's not my dad's truck. Sounds bad of me, like I was given everything, but this is actually the only truck I've ever owned myself. It is a little costly, though, I can't lie about that. I hope that helps out? Thank you.
Hopefully someone on here w/ an AE can do some tests and go from there.
Burning oil doesn't really point to an injector issue in my mind.
One little test you can do w/out an AE is drive around get the truck to temp and then go sit in a parking lot. Put the truck in neutral and then put the pedal to the floor. Watch the tach. Look at 2000-2200rpm. Look for the needle to jump. If it does it's a good sign of injector issue.
I am not a fan of Ford "Technicians". They don't diagnose well a lot of the time. Are more R&R guys.
I'm sure we can get you on the right track. There is a lot of good info thus far.
A reman'd set of injectors are about $1100, stage 1's for $1200 IIRC from riffraff.
Will make a difference if you indeed have injector issues.

Good luck
Thanks, man I appreciate it. I just don't have the money to be spending $1100 on injectors, I can't do it.

That helps. If you are mechanically inclined and have some tools, then getting the AE information will be useful. If you rely on others to service/maintain a Diesel with 1/4-million miles on it, well... something to factor into your decision-making process:
I live in Bethany on the opposite side of OKC. It is not too bad though only about 20 min. You got any free time this weekend?
If I don't have to work this weekend, I'll be free. I don't have any insurance on the truck right now since it's just been sitting, so I'm not wanting to drive it very far.
