E4OD, lost 4th gear
I just picked up this truck.

1990 F350, crew long box, 4x4, 460/E4OD
On my way home with the truck I lost 4th gear.
I was not towing anything, running unloaded on flat land with the cruise set at 60mph. All the sudden I had a growl from what seemed like the front of the truck, the things that flashed through my mind where axle related. I touched the brakes to cancel the cruise. The sound lasted for a few seconds then it was gone, I pulled over along the road to look things over, nothing was leaking, nothing appeared broken so I got back in and took off. But I never got 4th gear again. It will attempt 4th but it seems there's nothing there. I get a little spike in rpm, like a quick slip of the drive force and a 150-200 rpm spike on the tach then back down and it's still in 3rd gear.
4.10 gears, I'm running about 2650 rpm at 55.
I had been running maybe 2300-ish at 60 mph before I lost overdrive.
When I let off the gas at cruise speed the driveline does spin the engine, I seem to be locked up in the torque converter.
That's really all I know right now. No flashing light on the OD cancel button.
Looks like a rebuild runs around $1250, is this my best bet or is there something I can check for inside the magic gear changing device known as "auto transmission"?
(can I pull the pan and see anything that I can fix?)
Thanks.
Jason
