ALL right, another dumb question. I always thought OD was just another high end gear, but my 93 F350 automatic surely drives differently up a hill towing in OD when it drops down a gear, than when I disengage it. I have always towed with manual transmissions where I control the speed and tach, not really comfortable with the automatic shifting patterns under load up hills. I,m usually pulling about 10,000 pounds of boat. Thanx for any input.
High gear is usually a 1 to 1 ratio, with the torque locked up.OD goes beyond the 1 to 1 ratio,so the 1st 3 gears are pretty much the same as a tranny without OD.As for towing that much weight,if it was me(hence, this is only my opinion)i wouldnt use OD unless it was flat road.
I dont remember what tranny was in those trucks but I am sure its the same as my 97 a three speed with over drive. 3rd gear, when the converter is loked up is a 1:1 ratio, overdrive i thought was .84:1 ratio. i am thinking when you take the truck out of overdrive it might be unlocking the converter too, but mine won't it will just drop a gear and the converter stays locked.
If it starts to pull real hard up a hill take it out manualy, otherwise just lay into the throttle more, the tranny will down shift if it wants to. i wouldn't worry about it to much.
E4OD gear ratios:
1ST 2.71 to 1
2ND 1.54 to 1
3RD 1.00 to 1
4TH 0.71 to 1
REVERSE 2.18 to 1
If you have 410 gears then 10K would not be a hard pull, but anytime you encounter a hill or the trans starts hunting for a gear take it out of OD or drop to the next lowest. The IDI is no powerhouse like a PSD would be unless you have Turbo, propane, GV etc etc. Some boats have considerable exposed area ie flying bridges etc they must be taken into consideration as drag which adds to overall towing weight.
